Some of my fondest childhood memories involve tubs and tubs of vacation decorations.

As quickly as Thanksgiving leftovers had been stored safely away, the rubbermaid bins had been pulled up from the basement, and our house would be transformed.  Our as soon as-ordinary property became totally magical with the addition of santas and snowmen, garlands and twinkling lights,

And as a lot as I appreciate these memories, life appears unique now that I have a family members of my personal.  Like several parents of my generation, I wrestle with concepts of minimalism and eco-conscious living. I’m hesitant to gather and come across storage space for something, even vacation magic.

I used to assume that the magic of the holidays lived in these rubbermaid bins that it was the “stuff” of Christmas that created my memories so unique.

But of course it wasn’t the stuff.  It was the tradition of it all.

The anticipation I felt as my dad brought the containers up from the basement. The cinnamon smells that escaped as quickly as the very first lid was popped. The time we spent as a family members decorating our house. It was the expectation and the fulfillment. The attractive, seasonal rhythm these traditions brought to our lives.
